Seeing Your Loved Ones: A Gentle Guide to Video Calling
Plan a short practice video call with someone you trust. Prepare your device, check sound and picture, and write down the steps that help you.

Your first video call does not have to be a long family gathering. A short practice conversation with someone you trust gives you time to get comfortable with seeing and hearing each other.
Try this preparation exercise before the next birthday or family catch-up. The exact buttons depend on your device and app, so ask your practice partner to help you find them rather than expecting every screen to look the same.
1. Agree on the plan before the call
Choose a patient friend or relative and arrange a convenient time. Agree on the app you will both use and who will start the call. If you are unsure whether it works on your device, settle that question together first.
Keep their ordinary phone number handy as a backup. You can call them for help if the video connection does not work.
2. Get your space ready
Use a comfortable seat in a quiet place. Position the phone, tablet or computer so you can look at the screen without holding it awkwardly. Check that it has enough charge and an internet connection.
Think about what the camera might show behind you. Move private papers out of view before you begin.
3. Make the first conversation a test
Once connected, ask two simple questions: “Can you hear me?” and “Can you see me?” Give each other time to answer.
Ask your partner to help you locate the microphone, camera and end-call controls in your app. Practice one change at a time and return to the conversation before trying another. If you lose track, use your backup phone call to talk through what happened.
4. Write down what helped
Afterward, make a short note in your own words: the app name, how you joined and which control ended the call. Leave out passwords and private account details. Try another short conversation while the steps are still familiar.
A place to ask beginner questions
